Creating more distance from the Superman pic “Man of Steel”, Sony is moving up the release of the Will Smith sci-fi tentpole “After Earth” from June 7 to May 31. M. Night Shyamalan directed the movie, which stars Will Smith alongside his son Jaden Smith. The two play father and son, who crash-land on Earth years after the planet has been destroyed. The time shift will give “After Earth” two weeks of play, instead of one, before Warner Bros. rolls out Man of Steel on June 14
In its old slot, After Earth would have opened opposite Shawn Levy’s broad comedy “The Internship”, starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. The Fox film now has the June 7 to 9 weekend to itself. After Earth will now open opposite Universal’s thriller The Purge and Lionsgate’s “Now You See Me” also a thriller.
