Walt Disney Announces It Is Planning A Maleficent Sequel

MaleficentWalt Disney has revealed that a sequel to its 2014 Maleficent film is in the works. Considering the huge Box Office success of the first film, this news is also not coming as much of a surprise.

According to Deadline who first reported the news, Linda Woolverton, who penned the first script has been hired to write the second one, and it is expected Angelina Jolie will reprise her title role, although this is not certain yet.

Very little else is known at this point about the actors and characters. One big question is whether or not the storyline will involve Aurora, although I won’t be surprised if it doesn’t.

Directed by Robert Stromberg, the first Maleficent film told the story of the Sleeping beauty from the perspective of iconic villain, Maleficent. Initially Beautiful and pure-hearted, Maleficent has an peaceful life growing up in a harmonious forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom and perhaps to her own true happiness as well.

The Maleficent approach was a genius creative and marketing strategy and it is no surprise that the studio is willing to capitalize on this for a sequel and i’m sure there are also plans for a possible third installment.
