Disney’s Tron franchise has not been the most marketable, but apparently, the studio believes it can still be a hit. After the lackluster performance of the last one, Tron Legacy, released in 2010, one would have thought we had seen the end of the franchise.
One piece of good news however is that Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund will be returning for the third Tron movie rumored to be titled Tron: Ascension. Hedlund will reprise his role as Sam Flynn, arguably the titular “legacy” of the last film as the son of the first movie’s protagonist, Jeff Bridges’ Kevin Flynn, while Wilde will once again play Quorra, a program character from the virtual world of the Grid who was a disciple of Sam’s father and eventually escaped the Grid with Sam, becoming a real flesh and blood person.
According to THR who first broke the news, Wilde and Hedlund’s return is not the only news, as the director of Tron Legacy, Joseph Kosinski, is also expected to make a return as helmsman.
Due to the average performance of Tron Legacy despite the huge budget allocated to it, it is expected that Disney will be a little more cautious of how much they spend on the upcoming movie.
Although no official release date has been set yet, filming for Tron 3 is expected to start in the fall of this year.
