When I first saw the title of this movie, the first things that came to mind were Aristophanes’ Lysistrata and Spike Lee’s Chiraq – the latter, an adaption of the former. They both detail the story of how women went on a sex ‘strike’, to order to persuade their men to end the Peloponnesian war.
Much like Lysistrata, Wives on Strike, tells the story of a group of market women who decided to take matters into their own hands against their husbands in a bid to stir them into standing up for a young girl whom they wanted to protect from the wishes of her own father. The women set a series of events in motion to give the movie many moments of laughter without missing a beat on the reason for everyone to know why they are on strike.
The film stars Omoni Oboli, Uche Jombo, Chioma Akpotha, Ufuoma Mcdermott, Kehinde Bankole, Kalu Ikeagwu, Julius Agwu and Kenneth Okonkwo.
By the way, Wives on Strike is already getting stick, as there’s talk in some corners that the supposed tweet-fight between Chioma Akpotha on the one hand and Omoni Oboli, Uche Jumbo and Ufuoma Mcdermott on the other hand; was all a publicity stunt to raise awareness for the film.
Whatever the case, we’re already interested, and we’ll be watching out for when the movie hits cinemas later this year on April 8.
