“Amazing Spider-Man 2” is going to be trimming some bits from its storyline – specifically in regards to the iconic character of Mary Jane Watson, who was set to be played in reboot continuity by Shailene Woodley (The Descendants). Expectedly, Spider-Man fans were shocked to learn that Shailene Woodley’s role as Mary Jane Watson had been removed from “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” especially since all of the actress’ scenes had already been shot. Initially it was stated that Mary Jane was just being postponed to a later Spider flick, but that statement’s truth has been called into question. There was even a rumor that new cast addition Sarah Gadon was replacing Woodley in the role ASAP. That’s been denied, but the reasons behind MJ’s bumping has yet to be revealed. Until now… maybe!.
Hollywood Life reported that their sources reveal Shailene was being held back because Gwen might be biting the dust in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ and Marc Webb didn’t want there to be any competition for Peter Parker’s affections distracting from Emma Stone’s big finale. The source says:
“Emma Stone’s character dies in the next film and that really would take a bunch out of the film if Spider-Man all the sudden starts dating a new girl so close to an important characters death. They were noticing this occurring as they filmed Shailene’s scenes. They want to make the death of Gwen Stacy really mean something and then it will leave room for Shailene to shine in the third film.”
What do you think about postponing Mary Jane Watson until “Amazing Spider-Man 3”? Logical? Or not.
