In an earlier post today, I talked about who was next going to play Spider-Man and right on cue, Marvel and Sony Pictures have announced that Tom Holland will be taking on the iconic role of Peter Parker in the new Spider-Man movie set to be released on July 28, 2017.
According to the studios and producers, the 19 year-old actor was picked because they were impressed with his performances in The Impossible, Wolf Hall and In the Heart of the Sea, as well as other complex screen tests they conducted.
They also announced that director, Jon Watts will be helming the film. Speaking on Jon’s appointment, Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group Chairman, Tom Rothman said, “The Marvel process is very thorough, and that’s why their results are so outstanding. I’m confident Spider-Man will be no exception. I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent.”
It’s good to know that the screening process is over, and actual work on the film can start. It’s not clear yet what the title will be (Spectacular Spider-Man and The New Avenger are rumored titles), but we know it would be the second movie reboot in as many years for one of the most popular super heroes of all time.
