The new James Bond film, Spectre, will be released later this year, and we can’t wait to see it. Another thing we can’t wait for is to know who the new James Bond will be. In the past few months, there’s been a lot of talk as to who will next take on the iconic 007 role, with Idris Elba being one of the top contenders.
A new contender has emerged and the news is coming from the most unlikely of sources: a gambling website. According to THR, a U.K bookmaker has drastically slashed its odds for Homeland star, Damian Lewis to be the next James Bond. The odds were slashed from 25/1to 3/1. Now if you’re a gambling person, you know what this means; it means Lewis went from standing almost no chance to becoming a top contender overnight.
Now, it’s not clear whether it is just an attempt by the said bookmaker to grab cheap attention, but if it is, then it is working. According to a spokesperson for the company, the reason for the sudden change was due to the sudden influx of bets on Damian Lewis.
This is an unprecedented gamble, as for no apparent reason we have seen bets of up to £200 [$312] on Damian Lewis being named as the next Bond. This could well be significant and might herald the end of Daniel Craig as the world’s most famous spy” the spokesperson said.
The top five contenders according to bookmakers are Idris Elba, with an odd of 5/2, Tom Hardy (4/1), Henry Cavill (5/1) and Michael Fassbender (7/1).
Bookmakers are (kinda) reliable sources for news like this, because the last thing they want to do is loose a huge sum of money, so they’re always putting their ears to the ground for potential game changers, and maybe indeed, they have something the rest of the world don’t have yet. Whether this is the case or not, we’ll find out soon enough.
In the mean time, Spectre drops on November 6 and if you haven’t seen the trailer, you can peep it below.
