The Hollywood Reporter yesterday reported that Disney is in the process of developing a live-action adaptation of one of its classic animated features, Aladdin. Currently titled Genies, the film will serve as an origin story for the djinn previously voiced by the late Robin Williams in the 1992 feature film version.
The film is said, will explore the “realm of the Genies” and explain how one became trapped inside the iconic lamp. It only makes sense that this film will eventually pave the way for a retelling of the Aladdin story itself.
It seems like we may be moving away from the era of comic book adaptations into the era of classic fairy tale films. Why? You ask. Well, as at the last count, there are about 10 fairy tale adaptations in the works, all getting released between now and 2018. The list does not even include those that have not been announced.
I’m personally getting tired of the superhero movies, and the fairy tale adaptations might just be the answer to my prayers.
