The announcement was made yesterday by Fox CEO, Dana Walden at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour. The drama which is set in Atlanta revolves around three girls who come together to form a band and details their rise to the top in a challenging business. And while Empire is told from the point of view of music executives, Star will be told from the perspective of the artist.
“Like Empire, it’s set against the backdrop of the music business but from a different perspective,” she said.
According to the exec., the plan isn’t for there to be immediate crossovers with Empire, calling Star a mixture of music, drama and soap (which is basically what Empire is, when you look at it).
Star will be written, executive produced and directed by Lee Daniels.
That Fox will go for a new Lee Daniels drama or anything that looks like Empire shouldn’t come as a surprise, seeing how well the series has done, despite having aired only one season.
Empire returns for a second season on September 23.
